These Cinnamon French Toast Bites are so much fun to make! You kind of “sauté” them, as though you are stir frying! And it goes without saying that they’re fun to EAT too. 🙂
Those of you who have been following along for a while will know that I have a weakness for french toast. I’ve shared 9 french toast recipes so far, and I’ve even created a recipe collection for them! (You can check it out here -> New Ways With French Toast).
I expect to run out of ideas soon. A french toast drought.
But until then, I’ll keep sharing new takes on french toast that I come up with. No matter how wacky they may seem, as long as they’re scrumptious! And these little babies certainly fit that bill.
They taste like mini cinnamon doughnuts! With about 80% less calories – win, win, win!!
These French Toast Bites are really just a variation on my Cinnamon French Toast Sticks. The only difference is that the bread is cut into cubes and they are way more fun to cook.
“More fun to cook?”, I hear you ask. Yes, they really are! Because they are in the shape of cubes, browning each side by turning them is a real pain. So instead, I “sauté” them with a wooden spoon, as though I’m making a stir fry. It works perfectly!
Food you can eat with your hands. My favourite kind….
OK, here we go, here are my Baby Hands on show for you to have a giggle at. Gives you some perspective of the size of these French Toast Bites. But remember, my hands are abnormally small so the French Toast Bites look larger than they actually are!!

Cinnamon French Toast Bites
Ingredients
- 4 thick slices of slightly stale white bread (1"/2.5cm thick) (Note 1)
- 2 large eggs (or 3 small eggs)
- 1/4 cup milk
- Pinch of salt
- 1/4 cup white sugar
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon powder
- 3 tbsp butter , separated
- Maple syrup to serve (not optional!)
Instructions
- Cut the crust off the bread, then cut each piece into 9 equal cubes.
- Whisk the eggs, milk and salt in a medium bowl.
- Combine sugar and cinnamon in a shallow bowl.
- Melt 1 1/2 tbsp of butter in a fry pan over medium high heat. Don't let the butter brown.
- Quickly toss half the bread cubes in the egg mixture and use your hands to shake off excess egg mixture. Place the bread cubes in the fry pan and use a wooden spoon to "sauté" them until browned on all sides - about 2 to 3 minutes.
- Remove the bread cubes from the fry pan straight into the sugar mixture. Toss to coat, then remove onto a plate.
- Repeat with remaining bread cubes.
- Serve immediately, with maple syrup for dipping.

What a great idea Nagi…I absolutely love everything that comes in mini size…and the interesting thing that back in Brazil, we used to coat French toast with cinnamon and sugar…so good!
Thanks for the inspiration…have a wonderful week ahead 🙂
Nagi | RecipeTin says
Juliana! This is such a coincidence, I was literally just on your site reading the Tofu Fa with Sweet Peanut Soup! I was fascinated, I can’t believe I haven’t seen that at Yum Cha before! French toast coated in cinnamon and sugar….it’s like Brazilian Churros breakfast! 🙂

Dear Nagi,
These look lovely and definitely more fun when they are finger food. They remind me of Welsh rarebits where bread cubes are topped with a knob of cheddar and deep fried to golden bbrown. Super crisp and crunchy with melting cheese inside.
Nagi | RecipeTin says
* Ears Perk Up * Cheese? Bread? Deep fried? Sounds like a dream come true. How have I not tried this before??! Thank you for bringing it to my attention! Must try must try! 🙂
Lucy @ Bake Play Smile says
Haha yes cubes are so much more fun than sticks! These look incredible! What on earth are you doing to my waistline!!??
Nagi | RecipeTin says
I really don’t think you have a concern Lucy! 🙂
Helen @ Scrummy Lane says
You are teasing me on a Sunday morning because I don’t have anything nearly as interesting planned for brekky today!
Love these and pinning a million times!
Nagi | RecipeTin says
I bet you have everything you need to make these… 🙂
Sara | Belly Rumbles says
These look so delicious. But I see a major problem with this recipe Nagi! They are small bites which means, for me anyway, I would just keep going until I ate the LOT! You would be popping them one by one. LOL.
Nagi | RecipeTin says
I know right? Kind of like…erm…PRAWN TOAST??! (he he!)
Tina Jui | The Worktop says

Thank you Mel! I certainly do find these addictive. 🙂 To be honest, I usually have them for afternoon tea rather than breakfast!! 🙂
Tara @ Deliciously Declassified says
Yum! These look so cute and tasty! Is it wrong to also want to dip these in a powdered sugar glaze??
Nagi | RecipeTin says
Um….NO…..dipping into ANYTHING sweet just makes it better!! Hope you’re having a great weekend Tara! 🙂
Marissa | Pinch and Swirl says
You do have the cutest hands ever, Nagi. 🙂 So cool that these can be ‘sauteed’. I just love their little size and they look absolutely delicious!
Nagi | RecipeTin says
Oh no! Don’t talk about my midget pudgy baby hands! I want your long elegant fingers, please, pretty please? Could you pop over to Sydney and be my hand model? 🙂
Sacha says
Delicious!
I just made this as an afternoon treat (the sun has finally arrived!) and it was hit all round. This is the first time we’ve had sweet french toast as we’ve always felt suspicious towards it 😉 We’ve all been converted!
Nagi | RecipeTin says
Sacha! You literally just made my day! Aren’t they cool? I am SO GLAD you’ve been converted! I am a bit selective about sweet french toast myself 🙂 I never got into the pumpkin baked versions, or coconut or anything like that.
But this….they seriously taste like cinnamon doughnuts, don’t though? So they’re PERFECT for an afternoon tea treat!! Enjoy the rest of your weekend Sacha!
Lokness @ The Missing Lokness says
These are so fun and cool! Love the idea. I would a full bowl of these now! Totally pinning!

Nagi, I think you should open up a breakfast bar serving only French toast! I’m always amazed at how many creative ways you can reinvent one dish. And it’s not just the same recipe with little changes… you totally give it a new and improved make-over! I love your bite sized French toast idea. Anything eaten with your fingers is always more fun!
Nagi | RecipeTin says
Kathleen – let’s go into business together! He he, can you imagine out menu? OK, so you open the flagship US one and I’ll open one in Sydney. “Bistro Man Hands and Baby Hands” 🙂

Your photos are mouthwatering and really inspired me today Nagi! Thank you!
Nagi | RecipeTin says
Thanks so much Joanne! Brekki time here in Australia, how about them?? 🙂
Maureen | Orgasmic Chef says
I love these French toast bites. Usually I make mine in longer sticks so I have a better handle to get more syrup but I could stab these with a skewer and it would work the same way. 🙂
Nagi | RecipeTin says
Long french toast sticks are one of the first recipes I ever posted! 🙂
CakePants says
I’ll take a whole bowl of these cute little bites, please! At first I thought the syrup was chocolate sauce, and then I realized how fun it would be to have different dipping sauces – maple syrup, chocolate, raspberry sauce… I’ll have to give this a try sometime soon!
Nagi | RecipeTin says
Thanks! They are cute, aren’t they?? 😉
