This is a wonderful refreshing Indian salad that pairs really well with rich, spicy curries. Made with slices of juicy tomato, scattered with red onion, and drizzled with a mint dressing, then finished with a small pinch of garam masala. Serve this on the side of any Indian mains!

I feel like curry fanatics outside of India are familiar with well known Indian favourites like Butter Chicken, Tikka Masala, Goan Fish Curry and Biryani, but aren’t so familiar with Indian sides.

Given that I’ve embarked on a bit of an Indian curry mission, I’m going to share a handful of quick and easy vegetable sides for curries – starting with this Indian Salad with Tomato and Mint Dressing. Refreshing is the key here. Curries are flavour loaded and often quite rich, so we fresh sides are ideal!

VERSATILE INDIAN MINT DRESSING

The dressing here is simply Raita, thinned down slightly with water so it’s pourable. Raita is often served with this consistency anyway, rather than being thick and dollop-able.

Raita is a green mint yogurt sauce that is often served on the side of curries. Both yogurt and mint are ideal for cooling the palette in case you can’t handle the heat! 🔥🔥

The quantity of dressing here makes over a cup – enough to dress a salad, with plenty leftover to serve alongside your main. This Indian salad will be great with any Indian main dish. Enjoy! – Nagi x

An ideal refreshing salad to serve on the side of rich spicy curries! The dressing here is simply Raita, a mint yoghurt sauce often served on the side of curries.

Ingredients

Salad:

  • 3 large ripe tomatoes, , sliced into rounds
  • 1/4 red onion , very thinly sliced
  • 1 pinch of garam marsala , to taste (optional)

Raita Mint Dressing:

  • 1 cup / 250g plain yoghurt
  • 2 cups mint leaves
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice , or to taste
  • Couple of pinches of salt
  • 1 tbsp+ water

Instructions

Dressing:

  • Blitz ingredients in a food processor until it becomes a smooth, bright green sauce.
  • Use extra water to thin to a pourable consistency.

Salad:

  • Put the tomatoes in a bowl. Sprinkle with pinch of salt, mix with your hands and leave to rest for 10 minutes (extracts a bit of juice, makes them juicier).
  • Drain the tomatoes. Mix with the onion in a serving bowl.
  • Drizzle dressing over the tomato salad.
  • Sprinkle with a pinch of garam marsala if desired.

Recipe Notes:

Raita is typically a thin, pourable consistency, whether used for dressing or as sauce. Recipe makes more dressing than you need for this salad because it's hard to make less in a food processor so serve leftovers with the main.
Nutrition assumes 1/2 cup of the Mint Dressing is used for the salad.

I love this! We use the dressing even for just a regular everyday salad dressing

Tasted lovely and light but didn’t go green. Will make again for sure. Love Nagis recipes, they all turn out beautifully. My student son is also now a big fan.

Nice easy salad to go with curry thanks. Great idea with the raita, didn’t quite have enough mint leaves but still tasted yum.

We made this today, forgot about the onions and we went ‘light’ on the yoghurt. Also we didn’t blitz the mint leaves, so it looked more like a ‘farmer style’ salad. Still tasted very good, Next time we’ll probably do it slightly differently (as we are not the kind of person that follows recipes to the letter)….. This is a great side dish with curry and rice!

Hi Nagi can I use any mint leaves? I have applemint overgrowth in my garden and thought I’d better make use of them! Also just in general, any recommendations on what type of food processors I should use? Thanks
