This is a homemade recipe for Everything Bagel Seasoning that is famously used to sprinkle on bagels. It can be irritatingly hard to find here in Australia, or when I do, it’s excessively heavy on salt. But it’s so simple to make at home! Use it to jazz up avocado toast, eggs, or even roast vegetables.

Everything Seasoning

Homemade Everything Bagel Seasoning

This is a homemade recipe for Everything Bagel Seasoning, a crunchy, savoury American seasoning mostly known as a sprinkle for bagels, a recipe for which we also shared today. I’m sharing a homemade version for the seasoning because it’s not always easy to find here in Australia, or they are excessively salty.

But it’s so simple to make yourself!

These days it’s used much more broadly as a finishing seasoning – sprinkled straight onto avocado toast, eggs, salads, roasted vegetables, hummus, etc, anything that would benefit from a salty garlicky hit.

Everything Seasoning

Ingredients

Here’s what goes into a homemade Everything Bagels Seasoning.

Everything Seasoning - Ingredients
  • Sesame seeds – Untoasted because it was originally designed to go on bagels before baking, and if they were toasted they would become overly brown and bitter. But if you are making this seasoning to sprinkle onto things that won’t be baked, feel free to used toasted sesame seeds which will bring out the nutty flavour more!

  • Poppy seeds – Add a lovely little crunch and subtle nutty flavour.

  • Onion flakes – Dried onion pieces that add savoury flavour and a little sweetness. They are carried at my local grocery stores (Coles and Harris Farms, I’m in Australia). Not to be confused with ground onion powder which is finer.

  • Garlic flakes or granules – Dried garlic pieces that bring a lovely garlicky flavour without being overpowering. These are also at my local grocery store, As with onion flakes, not to be confused with garlic powder which is much finer.

  • Sea salt flakes – Add little pops of saltiness and crunch. I prefer flakes over fine salt for this seasoning, it disperses better. But I’ve provided conversions for using cooking salt / kosher salt.

Everything Seasoning

Just mix it all together, then sprinkle on breads (before baking), or straight onto your morning eggs. Keep it in an airtight container in your pantry for weeks!

No video together, because it’s such a simple recipe. 🙂

Hope you find it useful! – Nagi x

This is a homemade recipe for Everything Bagel Seasoning, a crunchy, savoury American seasoning most famously sprinkled on bagels, a recipe for which we also shared today. I’m sharing a homemade version for the seasoning because it’s not always easy to find here in Australia, or they are excessively salty – and it’s so simple to make yourself!
Recipe makes 12 teaspoons (4 tablespoons) which is the amount required to top 8 homemade bagels. Use it to sprinkle on breads, eggs, avocado toast, or roast vegetables!

Ingredients

  • 4 tsp white sesame seeds
  • 2 tsp black sesame seeds
  • 1 1/2 tsp poppy seeds
  • 1 3/4 tsp onion flakes or granules (Note 1)
  • 1 3/4 tsp garlic flakes or granules (Note 1)
  • 1 tsp sea salt flakes , or halve for cooking salt / kosher salt (table salt not recommended, too fine)
Prevent screen from sleeping

Instructions

  • Mix ingredients together. Store in a very airtight container for 6 to 8 weeks.
  • Sprinkle onto bagels or other breads (before baking), or as a finishing salt for "everything", from scrambled eggs to roasted vegetables, avocado toast to hummus!

Recipe Notes:

1. Garlic and onion flakes are little flakes, not to be confused with powder which is much finer and powdery, too fine for this seasoning. You can get onion flakes at Australia grocery stores (Coles, Woolies, Harris Farms) and garlic flakes at Harris Farms, or both are carried atIndian/sub-continent stores.
Otherwise, substitute garlic with granules which is very nearly as good, which is carried at regular Australia grocery stores.
