Southern style Homemade Baked Beans with Bacon in a thick, rich savoury sauce with a perfect balance of sweet and a hint of tang. An essential side for a southern feast, or an irresistible hearty breakfast. Or serve up a big bowl of it with some bread for slopping it up!
Baked beans as we know it here in Aussie is a breakfast staple. Heck, breakfast? Baked beans were a key part of my uni diet for breakfast, lunch and dinner! Open a can, pour over toast, pop it in the microwave. Dinner, on the table in 1 minute! 😉 (PS Try this homemade version, I promise it is worth it!)
Traditional baked beans here in Australia, NZ and Europe are beans in a mild, smooth tomato based sauce. This baked beans recipe is an American Southern-style baked beans recipe which is increasing in popularity here in Australia throughout the restaurant scene. The sauce has a much more intense flavour than Aussie baked beans, and rather than being known as a breakfast staple, it’s served as a side for meals. Think: Southern Fried Chicken, corn slathered in butter, corn bread (or try my muffins or this Corn Casserole!), Coleslaw, Potato Salad and a big ladle full of baked beans.
Oh my oh my what a FEAST!!!! (And I cannot believe out of that loaded plate I just described, I couldn’t link to a Southern Fried Chicken recipe. Must change that!).
Oh wait. I just realised that the photo above is with pork, not chicken. (Head smack!) I used the rub from my Slow Cooker BBQ Pulled Pork recipe, added a bottle of beer and slow roasted a pork shoulder until it was tender enough to pull apart with tongs. SO GOOD!
I know baked beans are traditionally served as a side in the states, but in all honesty, the sauce of this Homemade Baked Beans with Bacon is so good, with such much kapow flavours, I’m happy to slurp it up just like this: in a big bowl with some bread to slop up all that sauce.
Or even as breakfast. I promise there is a couple of pieces of (burnt) toast under that very generous serving of baked beans!
There is nothing tricky about this recipe, but I wanted to make a recipe video anyway because I just think it looks so crazy delicious when you lift the lid of the pot and see all that molten goodness. I wanted to capture that because I’m pretty sure when you see it, you will want to make this asap too!
You know something? This Southern style baked beans may taste quite different to Aussie baked beans. But I’d happily have either at anytime of the day! – Nagi x

Homemade Baked Beans with Bacon
- 1 tbsp oil
- 300g/ 10 oz bacon, chopped
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced (or 1 1/2 tsp garlic paste)
- 800g/28oz red kidney or other red beans, drained and rinsed (Note 1)
- 3/4 cup ketchup (Note 2)
- 3/4 cup tomato passata / tomato puree (Note 3)
- 1/2 cup molasses (Note 4)
- 1/4 cup cider vinegar
- 3/4 cup water
- 2 tsp mustard powder (or 1 tbsp Dijon or American mustard)
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
- 1 tsp salt + pepper to taste
- Heat oil over medium high heat (can skip oil if bacon is super fatty). Add bacon and cook for 1 1/2 minutes.
- Add onion and garlic. Cook for 3 minutes until onion and bacon are golden.
- Add remaining ingredients. Stir, bring to simmer, then place lid on.
- Then either turn down heat to medium low and cook on the stove for 1 hour, or bake at 180C/350F for 60 minutes (see next step for Slow Cooker & Pressure Cooker).
- SLOW COOKER: Reduce water to 1/4 cup, transfer to slow cooker and cook for 6 hours on low.PRESSURE COOKER: Reduce water to 1/2 cup (stove top) or 1/4 cup (electric) and cook for 45 minutes on high.
- The sauce should be thickened (cook with lid off for a bit if not thick enough). Adjust salt and pepper to taste at the end. See notes for serving suggestions!
