Strawberry Nutella French Toast Roll Ups

If you have a sweet tooth, if your kids are hovering around or if you generally lack self control around food, you should stop reading now. I meant it. Don’t look at the photo of these Strawberry Nutella French Toast Roll Ups!

“This is how you justify having dessert for breakfast…”

The problem with these Strawberry Nutella French Toast Roll Ups is that they are way too easy to make. Because frankly, let’s not kid ourselves, these are not a normal breakfast by any stretch of the imagination. I made these in the morning to take photos and as I munched on them afterwards, all I could think was “damn, these are the best doughnuts ever”. The thought of them being breakfast never even occurred to me.

But, but, but…..it’s french toast! French toast is for breakfast!

Okaaaaay then….okay. So is this how you justify having dessert for breakfast?

Strawberry Nutella French Toast Roll Ups - just a handful of ingredients to make these in 15 minutes. They taste like doughnuts! recipetineats.com

This isn’t an original recipe I came up with. I’ve seen strawberry stuffed french toast roll ups “around”, but I have noticed that they all seem to use cream cheese rather than Nutella. I tried it with cream cheese, but I much prefer making these with Nutella because….well, Nutella vs cream cheese? Nutella wins, hands down, every single time.

It constantly amazes me that with a handful of ingredients you can whip up a breakfast like this in 15 minutes. Honestly, no matter how sketchy I’m feeling after a few too many wines the night before, I can still muster up the strength to make these. And after a few bites, I perk up considerably!

I know it’s tempting to head out for brunch on the weekend, but why not stay in and try these? Coffee refills are free, and brunch at home means you don’t have to get out of your PJ’s or straighten your hair (ahh, the joys of being a girl!).

Happy brunching! – Nagi

These french toast roll ups taste like an awesome doughnut!

Ingredients

  • 6 slices fresh white sandwich bread , crusts removed
  • 1/2 punnet strawberries , diced small
  • 4 1/2 tbsp Nutella
  • 1/4 cup caster sugar (superfine sugar) (Note 1)
  • 1 tbsp butter

Egg Mixture

  • 1 egg (large)
  • 2 tbsp milk (full cream or low fat)
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  • Combine Egg Mixture in a bowl with a flat base large enough to lie the roll up in. Whisk to combine.
  • Spread sugar out in a small dish.
  • Use a rolling pin to roll the bread flat. This makes them easier to roll up (and stay rolled up).
  • Spread each piece of bread with around 3/4 tbsp of Nutella.
  • Sprinkle strawberries along the bottom of each piece of bread.
  • Roll up bread. The Nutella will keep it sealed.
  • Melt butter in pan over medium high heat.
  • Roll each roll up in the Egg Mixture, shake off excess then place in the pan. Repeat with remaining roll ups.
  • Cook for around 4 minutes until each side is golden, rotating every 1 minute or so.
  • Remove from pan and immediately place in the sugar. Roll to coat in sugar, then remove. Repeat with remaining roll ups.
  • Serve immediately, while warm.

Recipe Notes:

1. You won't use all the sugar. But I find that you need around 1/4 cup to ensure each roll up is evenly coated. You might be able to get away with less. If you sprinkle it on instead of rolling it, it won't stick as well.
Icing sugar (confectionary sugar) doesn't work, it just disappears instantly when it touches the roll up.
2. These are best eaten fresh. They tend to go soggy and because of the sugar, the bread "sweats" if left out.
3. Nutrition assumes 3 servings. But who am I kidding? It serves 2, at most (which is 381 calories per serving). Note that I adjust the amount of sugar that is actually consumed which I estimate to be 2 tbsp at most.

At my school we have a culinary arts and nutrition class and we used your recipe with one small tweak. Instead of putting the sugar on after we would roll the french toast roll up in the egg then the sugar so that the sugar would caramelize and make it more healthy. It was delicious!

Hi Nagi, do you think freezing would be an option after frying, before the surgar coating? And then just a quick re-fry or heat ?
This would be great at a family gathering, but would have to make a day before due to the crazy size of my family…

Hi Dar! You know, they reheat great in the oven! To be 100% sure the sugar sticks on well, what I would do is brush melted butter on them before popping it in a 350F/180C oven for 3 to 5 minutes. Then roll in caster sugar (super fine sugar). Worst case – dust with confectionary/icing sugar! That will definitely stick 🙂 It will look super pretty too!

This was a true delight! I halved the recipe in case I loved them so much I wanted to eat all of them (good thing as I don’t need to eat 6 pieces of bread at once!) 🙂 They were so good. What a clever idea to turn french toast into a roll up thing! I did use wheat bread as that’s what I always eat and it was still delicious (it was a soft wheat). Luckily there is the marvelous internet to translate for me for things like punnets and caster sugar! On a general note, I’m so excited I found your blog (shunted to a recipe from a buzzfeed article browsing during downtime at work-what luck!) b/c I immediately looked at every recipe, Your photos are so inviting and luscious they made my mouth water, the commentary is hilarious and informative, and your ideas are really creative. And I love that you give realistic serving sizes-so many times I’ve made something that is supposed to feed a ton then I’ve eaten half in one sitting-whoops! 😛 Thank you for a delicious meal and several more to come!

Hi Jennifer! You made me laugh out loud with your comment – thank you!! It is so true about serving sizes!! What is with that? I get all excited seeing a chowder that’s only 300 calories a serving but end up consuming TRIPLE the serving size!! Ha ha – never on my blog. I have a fairly….um….robust appetite. So I am always honest with serving sizes!

I’m so glad you enjoyed this recipe, it’s pretty cool isn’t it? Have you seen the ham cheese ones? I actually prefer them to these because I’m more of a savoury girl 🙂 OH and they are less calories than this because they actually only have a tiny sliver of cheese in them, it’s actually quite amazing how a small amount of cheese can go so far in a roll up!

Thanks again for your lovely message! And I’m so glad you are enjoying my blog!! N x

Hi Rupinder! I’m sorry, but I do not know of a suitable substitute for the egg to make it french-toast like. However, you could just omit the egg mixture and pan fry (use a bit more butter) and it will still be really delicious! Crispier too! 🙂

Hi Lauren! I’m afraid that won’t work as well. The egg mixture would take longer to cook and as a result, the Nutella will melt and become too thin. Pan frying is much easier and faster. 🙂

With my daughter back from University on break and our grandson over for the night (his parents went to Vegas!!) I decided it would be the perfect time to make these! I did not use any fruit, as fresh strawberries are no where to be found, I just used Nutella -they were so sweet and YUMMY! EVEN the ‘picky’ eater who does not like Nutella- WHO DOES NOT LIKE NUTELLA??!- loved them! You do not need a plate 😉 When I was eating I went through all the other fillings I could use and decided to make 3 different fillings for Christmas morning brunch. I am going to make one with a sweet butter, the Nutella and a raspberry fruit spread for the fillings. You really do not need much filling, in fact the ones with less filling tasted better, as these are really sweet after rolled in the sugar. I even re-heated one for dessert in a small fry pan for Sully. These are really the perfect brekki for children as they can eat with no utensils! THANK YOU again Nagi for your creative and tasty recipes- you have a gift! Lisa.

I had to laugh at your comment – “WHO DOES NOT LIKE NUTELLA??!!” I’m with you there!! I didn’t think such people existed! Your fillings sound FABULOUS! I wish I had thought of doing assorted fillings! You are right about not needing much filling. Because strawberries are fresh, they cut through the sweetness of the nutella so if you don’t use a fresh fruit inside, then yes, you can definitely cut back on the filling. Any berries would be wonderful inside, as long as they are soft and don’t need cooking / not too watery (e.g. oranges would not work).

Thank you for your wonderful comments, feedback and suggestions as always Lisa! I truly appreciate it, your feedback gives me inspiration! – Nagi
