If you have a sweet tooth, if your kids are hovering around or if you generally lack self control around food, you should stop reading now. I meant it. Don’t look at the photo of these Strawberry Nutella French Toast Roll Ups!
“This is how you justify having dessert for breakfast…”
The problem with these Strawberry Nutella French Toast Roll Ups is that they are way too easy to make. Because frankly, let’s not kid ourselves, these are not a normal breakfast by any stretch of the imagination. I made these in the morning to take photos and as I munched on them afterwards, all I could think was “damn, these are the best doughnuts ever”. The thought of them being breakfast never even occurred to me.
But, but, but…..it’s french toast! French toast is for breakfast!
Okaaaaay then….okay. So is this how you justify having dessert for breakfast?
This isn’t an original recipe I came up with. I’ve seen strawberry stuffed french toast roll ups “around”, but I have noticed that they all seem to use cream cheese rather than Nutella. I tried it with cream cheese, but I much prefer making these with Nutella because….well, Nutella vs cream cheese? Nutella wins, hands down, every single time.
It constantly amazes me that with a handful of ingredients you can whip up a breakfast like this in 15 minutes. Honestly, no matter how sketchy I’m feeling after a few too many wines the night before, I can still muster up the strength to make these. And after a few bites, I perk up considerably!
I know it’s tempting to head out for brunch on the weekend, but why not stay in and try these? Coffee refills are free, and brunch at home means you don’t have to get out of your PJ’s or straighten your hair (ahh, the joys of being a girl!).
Happy brunching! – Nagi

Strawberry Nutella French Toast Roll Ups
Ingredients
- 6 slices fresh white sandwich bread , crusts removed
- 1/2 punnet strawberries , diced small
- 4 1/2 tbsp Nutella
- 1/4 cup caster sugar (superfine sugar) (Note 1)
- 1 tbsp butter
Egg Mixture
- 1 egg (large)
- 2 tbsp milk (full cream or low fat)
- Pinch of salt
Instructions
- Combine Egg Mixture in a bowl with a flat base large enough to lie the roll up in. Whisk to combine.
- Spread sugar out in a small dish.
- Use a rolling pin to roll the bread flat. This makes them easier to roll up (and stay rolled up).
- Spread each piece of bread with around 3/4 tbsp of Nutella.
- Sprinkle strawberries along the bottom of each piece of bread.
- Roll up bread. The Nutella will keep it sealed.
- Melt butter in pan over medium high heat.
- Roll each roll up in the Egg Mixture, shake off excess then place in the pan. Repeat with remaining roll ups.
- Cook for around 4 minutes until each side is golden, rotating every 1 minute or so.
- Remove from pan and immediately place in the sugar. Roll to coat in sugar, then remove. Repeat with remaining roll ups.
- Serve immediately, while warm.

Hope you LOVE IT Joseph!!! 🙂
Making it for pudding on sunday
At my school we have a culinary arts and nutrition class and we used your recipe with one small tweak. Instead of putting the sugar on after we would roll the french toast roll up in the egg then the sugar so that the sugar would caramelize and make it more healthy. It was delicious!
Hi Parker! You know, I can’t believe I have never tried it that way. That’s such a great idea, thank you!! I’m so glad the class enjoyed it!! 🙂
Hi Nagi, do you think freezing would be an option after frying, before the surgar coating? And then just a quick re-fry or heat ?
This would be great at a family gathering, but would have to make a day before due to the crazy size of my family…
Hi Dar! You know, they reheat great in the oven! To be 100% sure the sugar sticks on well, what I would do is brush melted butter on them before popping it in a 350F/180C oven for 3 to 5 minutes. Then roll in caster sugar (super fine sugar). Worst case – dust with confectionary/icing sugar! That will definitely stick 🙂 It will look super pretty too!
Thanks!
This is soooo amazing! I know my son is going to love these roll ups. Thank you for sharing.
So glad you like the look of this! Hope your son DOES love them! 🙂
These were a true delight! Made about 30 of these and they were gone within two minutes 😉 HIGHLY RECOMMEND
I’m so glad you enjoyed them! Gee, I’m surprised they took 2 whole minutes to disappear!! 🙂 Thanks so much for coming back to let me know you loved them!!
This was a true delight! I halved the recipe in case I loved them so much I wanted to eat all of them (good thing as I don’t need to eat 6 pieces of bread at once!) 🙂 They were so good. What a clever idea to turn french toast into a roll up thing! I did use wheat bread as that’s what I always eat and it was still delicious (it was a soft wheat). Luckily there is the marvelous internet to translate for me for things like punnets and caster sugar! On a general note, I’m so excited I found your blog (shunted to a recipe from a buzzfeed article browsing during downtime at work-what luck!) b/c I immediately looked at every recipe, Your photos are so inviting and luscious they made my mouth water, the commentary is hilarious and informative, and your ideas are really creative. And I love that you give realistic serving sizes-so many times I’ve made something that is supposed to feed a ton then I’ve eaten half in one sitting-whoops! 😛 Thank you for a delicious meal and several more to come!
Hi Jennifer! You made me laugh out loud with your comment – thank you!! It is so true about serving sizes!! What is with that? I get all excited seeing a chowder that’s only 300 calories a serving but end up consuming TRIPLE the serving size!! Ha ha – never on my blog. I have a fairly….um….robust appetite. So I am always honest with serving sizes!
I’m so glad you enjoyed this recipe, it’s pretty cool isn’t it? Have you seen the ham cheese ones? I actually prefer them to these because I’m more of a savoury girl 🙂 OH and they are less calories than this because they actually only have a tiny sliver of cheese in them, it’s actually quite amazing how a small amount of cheese can go so far in a roll up!
Thanks again for your lovely message! And I’m so glad you are enjoying my blog!! N x
This looks ridiculously good, Nagi!
Thanks so much Shiran!! 🙂
so Delicious …. love your blog very much
Thank you Jimmy! ❤️
U can make it veg by using custard powder in milk vanilla essence and little sugar…..dip just like egg and fry in butter
Hi Sakshi! I’m sorry, but I have no idea, I’ve never tried that. I’d love to know if it works though, if you try it! In theory it does sound like it would work….but I am not 100% sure. 🙂 Sorry!
Hi there! This recipe looks to die for. But I was wondering if there is an alternative to using egg as one of my friends has an egg allergy.
Thanks ☺️
Hi Rupinder! I’m sorry, but I do not know of a suitable substitute for the egg to make it french-toast like. However, you could just omit the egg mixture and pan fry (use a bit more butter) and it will still be really delicious! Crispier too! 🙂
Haha that’s a good plan. Thank you ☺️ I’ll let u know how it goes!
Can you make these in a toaster-oven?
Hi Lauren! I’m afraid that won’t work as well. The egg mixture would take longer to cook and as a result, the Nutella will melt and become too thin. Pan frying is much easier and faster. 🙂
Hi Naggi.. Thank you for posting this recipe. I simply love french toasts for breakfast and of course Nutella too. On my blog I did a post about Nutella Filled French Toast but this idea of roll-ups is so creative and amazing. I adapted your recipe and did my version of Orange Chocolate French Toast Roll-ups.
I love it!
Hi Hirra! Orange chocolate is a fabulous combination of flavours – wowee! I must pop over and visit your blog to check your nutella ones out!
With my daughter back from University on break and our grandson over for the night (his parents went to Vegas!!) I decided it would be the perfect time to make these! I did not use any fruit, as fresh strawberries are no where to be found, I just used Nutella -they were so sweet and YUMMY! EVEN the ‘picky’ eater who does not like Nutella- WHO DOES NOT LIKE NUTELLA??!- loved them! You do not need a plate 😉 When I was eating I went through all the other fillings I could use and decided to make 3 different fillings for Christmas morning brunch. I am going to make one with a sweet butter, the Nutella and a raspberry fruit spread for the fillings. You really do not need much filling, in fact the ones with less filling tasted better, as these are really sweet after rolled in the sugar. I even re-heated one for dessert in a small fry pan for Sully. These are really the perfect brekki for children as they can eat with no utensils! THANK YOU again Nagi for your creative and tasty recipes- you have a gift! Lisa.
I had to laugh at your comment – “WHO DOES NOT LIKE NUTELLA??!!” I’m with you there!! I didn’t think such people existed! Your fillings sound FABULOUS! I wish I had thought of doing assorted fillings! You are right about not needing much filling. Because strawberries are fresh, they cut through the sweetness of the nutella so if you don’t use a fresh fruit inside, then yes, you can definitely cut back on the filling. Any berries would be wonderful inside, as long as they are soft and don’t need cooking / not too watery (e.g. oranges would not work).
Thank you for your wonderful comments, feedback and suggestions as always Lisa! I truly appreciate it, your feedback gives me inspiration! – Nagi
You are welcome, YOU give me inspiration- so we are even!! Happy Holidays, and my family will ask AGAIN at Christmas brunch, “Mom, are these from ‘THAT girl’ , the one whose dishes you are always making?” And the answer will be “THAT girl is Nagi, and YES!’ hahahaha! No soggy fruit used in Portland- THANKS!
I am totally honoured at the thought that I get a reference at your dinner table!! Lisa, truly, it is messages like this that inspire me to keep cooking and sharing and coming up with new ideas 🙂 Thank you so much for your messages, they mean alot to me!
I am trying it this weekend with my grandson, he love nutella, and will tryit with peanut butter too. Strawberry and peanut butter seems a good combination too. I really watch my sugar intake, I am thinking sprinkle of powder sugar will good enough. Thanks
Eve
Hi Eve, I definitely make this without Nutella when I am watching my calories!! It is still delicious 🙂
tried this with ham and cheese. And will definitely try this one too! Yummy!
Oh yay! I’m glad you tried the ham cheese one!! This one is really yummy. Definitely a TREAT for breakfast!!
Wow Nutella…..and strawberries! I can’t ignore this. It will made my day so beautiful 🙂
Thanks Amallia, you’re so sweet!
What a pretty and tasty breakfast idea when you are after something special!
Thank you very much! It really is a bit of a treat – and so easy to make too! My favourite kind 🙂
wow!!! this looks so delicious! I’m going to try them soon and maybe an eggless version 🙂
Hi Priya – this one will be hard to make eggless!! Because the rolls are dipped into an egg mixture 🙂 Sorry!
Wow Nagi. These look delicious and are so creative. Yum Yum.
Thanks so much! So nice of you to say! 🙂
Hi Nagi, this is a DEFINITE make for my grandson Sullivan. We can not get fresh strawberries as it is FREEEEEZING! here right now, but bananas will work?! and Sully can carry it around and go YUM every time he takes a bite as he is hating the highchair right now! I can carry one around also! I will let you know what we think and send a photo 😉 In FREEEZING Portland, OR- Lisa
Hi Lisa! Seeing your comments always makes me smile! 🙂 Bananas will definitely work, absolutely! I would chop them up into batons / sticks, less cutting than dicing! Would love to hear if Sully approves…:)
Too tempting is right! I’m always up for dessert for breakfast! And, of course, anything with Nutella, is a winner!
Thanks Annie! And I’m totally with you – Nutella with pretty much everything is GOLD!!
